Name; Mao
Fandom; Darker than BLACK
Timeline; Pre/early series
Abilities before entering the city (if applicable); Able to possess the bodies of animals
History/Background; Mao used to be 43 year old "contractor," although he is currently trapped in the body of a very-typical looking black cat.
Relatively little is known about his past, as he is not the sort of person who spends much time talking about themselves. All that is known is that he paid off his contract in full at the price of his human body.
Contractors are previously normal people granted special abilities by a greater force when Heaven's Gate appeared in South America and Hell's Gate in Japan. With the appearance of contractors, the true stars of the night sky were replaced. Instead, each star represents the life of a contractor. They are identified by their messier codes. (Mao is identified by the star HM-432.) Contractors are noted by their apparent lack of emotions, which is actually the result of a heightened ability to think and act rationally, remorse for killing is an absent emotion. They also make payments for their contracts known as "remuneration," which can manifest in anyway from an odd compulsion like turning shoes upside down, to the bizarre, such as drinking blood. Usually, they cannot be paid off, which is why Mao is such an unusual case. It is not known what his remuneration was, only that the loss of his body fulfilled the price in whole.
Mao acts as support and recon for Hei's team, often receiving their orders from the Syndicate directly via the wireless network he is constantly connected to (without accessing the network periodically, Mao risks giving in to the limited brain capacity of the cat body and losing the ability to remain "human.") He is fearful of the syndicate, but respectful of the rest of the team. Both his form and ability allow him to spy on and distract targets easily.
Despite his usual loyalty to the Syndicate, Mao accompanies Hei and Yin into Hell's Gate, violating the organization's wishes. There, while attempting to access some of PANDORA's older files, he is detected and abandoned by the Syndicate.
While he doesn't technically die, he is cut off from his wireless connection and loses his human consciousness. Leaving only the advice that he doesn't like dry food and the hope that they'll meet again, the cat consciousness takes over, and Mao flees from Hei and Yin into the Gate.
Personality; Mao is generally serious about his job, but is easily amused when it comes to observing Hei react to situations in an unpredictable manner. He is fairly casual in his off time, and is a generally good natured guy with a steady sense of humor. He is rather easily surprised, and never very graceful in reacting to a shock. He is relatively at ease with his cat body, and enjoys the simpler life it offers between missions. He often accepts the food offered by others, and has a rivalry with Hei's landlord (who blames Mao for getting in the trash).
Loss upon arriving; Contractor abilities (his body switching, ability to erase minds, heightened rational thinking ability)
Ability gained; Telepathy (is able to hear the thoughts of others close to him)
